More Than Money Careers is being recognized for its efforts to transform higher education by helping university career centers and professors best assist students and graduate as they translate their education into jobs that maximize impact and income. The award will help advance MTM Careers’ vision of a world in which college graduates get hired faster for well-paying jobs that have a positive social and environmental impact on the world.

In 2010, MTM Careers launched a groundbreaking set of partnerships with over 25 universities to make their career center staff and faculty members as effective with impact-driven students as they are with traditional students looking for internships and jobs in the US or around the world. Through its online staff/faculty training programs and its innovative career modules, MTM Careers strengthen career centers’ ability to help students compete for well-paying internships and jobs in a variety of fields, including impact investing, education reform, international development, microfinance, sustainability, and clean tech. MTM Careers programs do not replace career centers, instead they expand university career centers’ effectiveness by providing training and stand-alone resources that strengthen partnerships between students and their career center. MTM Careers’ process and resources have been implemented and integrated into existing career services offerings in 26 US-based universities. MTM Careers’ partners include Ashoka U Campuses such as Babson College, Brown University, Cornell University, and the University of Maryland. MTM Careers provide unique training services and career services products that can be replicated and adapted on a national and international scale.

MTM Careers is actively seeking college partners that share its vision of turning graduates into well-paid mission-driven leaders in the private, nonprofit, and government sectors. MTM Careers unique approach helps career centers staff provide the career advice, resources and best practices that students and graduates need to get hired faster for well-paying jobs that will enable them to turn the global perspective, leadership skills, entrepreneurial skills and grit they developed through their curricular and extracurricular college education into an impact-driven internship or a job. MTM Careers is proud to provide universities with the internal capacity and best practices they need to prepare young leaders for success in the global marketplace of impact-driven careers.

The innovation award is administered through a partnership between Ashoka U, an initiative of Ashoka focused on supporting social entrepreneurship education, and the Cordes Foundation. Dr. Mark Albion and Dr. Mrim Boutla, co-founders and Managing Partners of MTM Careers, will give a presentation and receive the award at the Ashoka U Exchange, hosted at the University of San Diego from February 21 – 23, 2013. The event will bring together over 150 colleges and universities representing forty countries to share best practices and advance collaborative projects at the nexus of social entrepreneurship and higher education.

Would a for-profit CSR job at a big company be a good fit? A traditional role in a sustainable business where every employee is a CSR manager (e.g. Seventh Generation, Patagonia)? A nonprofit consulting job help traditional businesses become less environmentally unsustainable (e.g. FSG Social Impact Advisors, Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps Fellowship)?

My conversations with emerging and established sustainability professionals often reminds me of Shaq Vs. In this show, Shaquille O’Neal, who is best known for his stellar NBA career, challenged other athletes in their own sports. For example, Shaq would swim against Michael Phelps, or throw a football against NFL Quarterback Roethlisberger. In an other episode, Shaq challenged Misty May and Kerri Welsh in beach bolleyball.

Now what’s interesting here is that similar skills and abilities are valuable in both basketball and volleyball. Players that are tall, have excellent ball anticipation abilities, and possess team leadership skills are very valuable in both sports. Furthermore, Shaq was paired up with Todd Rogers, who won the Beijing Olympics Gold Medalist in the men’s beach volleyball event. Given his partner and his transferable abilities, could Shaq be as good in beach volleyball as he was on a basketball court? Well, not really. Shaq got quite frankly humiliated on a volleyball court. It turned out that Shaq’s amazing size was an asset when he was at the right place at the right time both in basketball and in volleyball. Unfortunately, most of the time, his size was a liability when he attempted to move on sand. Despite benefiting from a great partner and many transferable skills, Shaq lost in two sets against Misty May and Kerri Welsh.

What does this tell us about your sustainability job choices? We are all great athletes, with strengths, skills, and the knowledge we have acquired through education, professional experiences, and our volunteer or service efforts. But the same job can be a basketball court for one professional, or a volleyball court for another professional. How do you discern whether a job you are considering would be a basketball or a volleyball court for you? You might be among the many professionals hungry to get business done better that are simply unable to articulate (and therefore recognize) what job and employer combination is a basketball or a volleyball court option based on your own unique skills, job priorities, and impact area.

The good news if you are a Shaq on a volleyball court is that we have a simple solution for you! We have developed career modules to help you leverage our Triple Fit Framework (download our handout) and clarify your own unique priorities and preferences:

What impact area is a better fit for your values and passions (Get Clear Module #2)?

What types of organizational culture and jobs would be a better fit for you in terms of how each job would fit your priorities in terms of material rewards, prestige, community, family, and self-development (Get Clear Module #4)?

What career assessments (e.g. CareerLeader, SkillScan) can tell you about the transferable skills you have that you can bring to your next job (Get Clear Module #3)?

Defining your triple fit will enable you to build your impact-driven networking pitch. This process will also enable you to conduct better employer research (Get Connected Module #1), and increase your chances to convert your applications into interviews (Get Hired Module #2), and your interviews into offers (Get Hired Module #4).

If you feel like Shaq on a volleyball court in your current job, know that you have more career choices to feel more like Shaq on a basketball court than you think! Of course Shaq has now retired from the NBA. He is trying different things, searching for his next basketball court. Will it be becoming a sports commentator? Will he become Professor O’Neal now that Shaq earned his doctorate in education? As we all are, Shaq is on a journey to earn good money by leveraging his talents, skills, knowledge, and passions. We hope that our triple fit model will help you get hired faster so that you can get well-paid to have a positive social and/or environmental impact on our world!

Are they only for finance majors? Do you need an MBA to get hired in impact investing? Where are the jobs and are they paying as well as Wall-Street jobs?

It struck me that ‘impact investing’ meant something different to each of the career coaches, students, and working professionals I got questions from. Some believed that impact investing meant to work for a select department in a big financial services firm, such as for example the Goldman Sachs 10,000 women initiative. Others thought it meant working as a Program Officer for a family or corporate foundation (e.g. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, GE Foundation). These impact investing jobs are among the most visible impact investing jobs, but they are far from being the only options in this growing field.

To help students and working professionals put order into the chaos of impact investing careers, Mark and I created the primer below. In about 13 minutes, this primer will give your students and alumni a clear picture of the impact investing career options available to them across sectors, as well as 30+ live links (e.g. books, online research tools, job boards) they can immediately leverage:

Last weekend, Liz Maw stood facing around 2,700 impact-driven professionals at the 2012 Net Impact Conference and issued a challenge: “Do you have the courage to lead us – rapidly – into a new world of responsible and sustainable solutions?”

I was thrilled that Liz issued this challenge, because courage stems from a structured road map one can follow. This is what we do: We provide emerging leaders with the structured process and resources they need to get hired for jobs that maximize impact and income. We do so by making university staff and faculty as effective with impact-driven students as they are with traditional students.

Over the past 10 years, many universities have created new courses or adapted their curriculum to integrate more best practices around social and environmental value creation. Many universities have also expanded their experiential learning offerings, including sending students on trips to work with social enterprises around the world, or offering project-based consulting services to local or global nonprofits.

However, most universities remain woefully ineffective when it comes to helping students get hired for jobs that maximize impact and income. Most university staff and faculty are at a loss on how to wrap their mind around the chaotic landscape of social and environmental change jobs. Is social intrapreneurship the only route to a CSR job in a big company? What are my students’ options in getting hired by a social enterprise rather than launching one? What is a Benefit Corporation? What job opportunities exist in impact investing? These are frequent questions university staff and faculty try to address with their students. Our mission is to help university staff and faculty effectively address these questions so that their graduates can “lead us – rapidly – into a new world of responsible and sustainable solutions.”

To do so, Mark and I led two sessions during the Net Impact Conference. One was designed to help over 180 chapter leaders increase their coaching effectiveness with students looking for impact-driven jobs. Our second session, in collaboration with Tracy Triggs-Matthews, Assistant Director of the UNC Kenan-Flagler Center for Sustainable Enterprise (CSE), focused on how our staff training and career modules have transformed how UNC Kenan-Flagler staff coaches students interested in impact-driven jobs.

Our collaboration with UNC Kenan-Flagler started over a year ago, with Katrin Baker from their Career Management Center (CMC) and Tracy Triggs-Matthews participating in our online staff training. This guaranteed that students would receive consistent strategic advice and resources whether they asked their career questions to CMC or CSE staff. Seeing the value of our process and resources, UNC Kenan-Flagler invited us to lead an in-person staff training to further expand the effectiveness for all CMC and CSE staff working with impact-driven students. Finally, UNC Kenan-Flagler students gained access to our career modules in August 2012.

Tracy reported that our partnership led to the following results:

Consistency Across Programs: All UNC Kenan-Flagler staff leverage the same integrated model. Our MTM Careers process and tools are used by all CMC and CSE staff, as well as by 60+ 2nd year student career mentors, guaranteeing consistency and maximium effectiveness across all programs (undergraduate students, full-time MBA, online MBA, alumni/executive services).

Increased Collaboration: All constituents, CMC staff, CSE Staff, and Net Impact Chapters are all using our MTM Careers content to best work together on career-oriented events. They leverage our content and tools to assess students’ needs and optimize the integration of efforts around Sustainability in Action Treks, Careers in Sustainability Forum, Speakers Series, etc.

Many programs and professional associations initiatives focus on providing resources and training to students. We are different. We leverage the fact that the university staff members and faculty we work with remain at their university on average longer than students. As a result, our university partners benefit from a lasting change when it comes to maximizing career coaching effectiveness with impact-driven and traditional students and alumni.

During our session with Tracy and our session with chapter leaders, we were honored to receive overwhelmingly positive feedback about our Career Opportunities Map. Students, working professionals, and university staff found how we organize mission-driven jobs by skill sets or function (as rows of our map), and sectors (as columns of our map) transformational in terms of putting order in the chaos of social and environmental change jobs (download our map with examples of Net Impact community members for each cell). As a recovering cognitive neuroscientist, I couldn’t be happier about this feedback, because, to quote Oliver Wendell Homes, ‘a mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions’.

That our Career Opportunities Map offers an upgraded and structured framework is key. But that’s not enough. But most important is one’s ability to decide which 1-2 cells of the map is a better fit for one’s unique career goals and life priorities. From our interactions during and beyond the Net Impact Conference, we are thrilled to hear that our career modules and staff training are having their intended impact. They offer 24/7 access to a structured process and career assessments that empowers students and working professionals to (1) decide which cells of the Map is a better fit for one’s next career move, (2) find their tribe of like-minded professionals and organizations, and (3) identify and compete for jobs that best fit them.

We know our modules are working based on feedback from our users. We started thinking that our modules would be most useful to graduate students:

“More Than Money Careers (MTMC) helped me develop a strategy on how to turn my passion for doing well by doing good into a job. MTMC’s modules showed me how to narrow my focus to my main sector of interest while also broadening my strategies for obtaining my desired job. Getting a job is no easy task, but MTMC provides specific strategies and suggestions on the best way to go about your search. Unlike typical career advice companies that just say do this or that, MTMC showed me examples from leaders in the field and provided lists of companies in every sector. After just an hour of watching modules, I had updated my twitter profile to better reflect the interests and skills I want my followers to remember, I had chosen my sector of interest from an easy to understand landscape map, and I had found three for-profit social enterprise specific job boards from among the more than 20 live links to jobs boards within the module. I now feel empowered with the tools and strategies to not only understand the career landscape for those who want to earn more than money but to strategically position myself within it to obtain the job of my dreams.”

The beginning of fall brings a new wave of students and graduates, all eager to learn about sustainability career options. Just last week, I received 10 LinkedIn invitations and 20 emails asking me about how to get hired for a sustainability job or internship.

The interesting part is that ‘sustainability career’ meant something different to each of these 30 students or recent graduates. Most of them believed that their only option is to be working in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) department at a big company. Such CSR jobs are very visible, and highly coveted. However, CSR jobs are only a sliver of the sustainability career options emerging and established leaders can compete for.

Generally speaking, sustainability careers can be defined as jobs that successfully blend financial return with social impact and environmental stewardship. Some sustainability jobs will focus on environmental sustainability (e.g. energy efficiency, renewable energy, cleantech, green packaging, green supply chain, green building). Some sustainability jobs focus more on societal sustainability (i.e. social innovation), including careers in poverty eradication, sustainable development, education reform, women’s empowerment, sustainable agriculture, or access to quality healthcare.

Furthermore, while CSR jobs are present at big companies, one can also choose to build a career in a company where every employee is a CSR manager. These for-profit companies can either be a sustainable business (e.g. Timberland) or a for-profit social enterprise (e.g. TOMs).

To clear some of the confusion around sustainability careers and provide resources for emerging leaders to explore sustainability career options beyond CSR jobs, Mark and I created the primer below. In less than 10 minutes, this primer will give your students and alumni a clear picture of the sustainability careers available to them across sectors, as well as 20 resources (e.g. books, online research tools, job boards) they can immediately leverage:

Students interested in traditional careers in big corporations or in fellowship programs (e.g. Teach For America, PeaceCorps) are likely to have opportunities to attend on-campus presentations that feature alumni, who speak about their experiences, and give students tips on how to best compete for these opportunities.

Not so for many social change careers, especially those that focus on poverty alleviation in the US and globally. Whether in microfinance, traditional governmental aid programs, social enterprises, women empowerment or technology-based innovations in maternal health, there are many career paths that help the poorest attain financial independence. Many emerging leaders interested in careers in poverty eradication or sustainable development feel that information about these careers are hard to find. They might not know what organizations they should be focusing on. Or if they know, they might get discouraged when they don’t hear back after they send informational interview requests to individuals that they reach out to. It is unfortunately a reality: Many professionals want to help, but many don’t have the time to connect with individual students given the demands of their current job.

iOnPoverty addresses these issues: iOnPoverty makes insights and tips from poverty alleviation social entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs available via free recorded informational interviews. During his recent GAMECHANGER interview on Blended Profit, Jonathan Lewis, founder of iOnPoverty, shared insights on how iOnPoverty aims at inspiring and informing young people, and especially students, through insights gained from video informational interviews conducted with effective and powerful social entrepreneurs and innovators that have dedicated their careers to eradicate poverty in the US and globally. A few examples of iOnPoverty video information interviews include Regina Starr Ridely, Publishing Director of the Stanford Social Innovation Review, Saul Garlick, Founder of ThinkImpact, and Akaya Windwood, President of Rockwood.

During his GAMECHANGER interview conducted by Blended Profit Chief Curator, Brian Weinberg and by Blended Profit Entrepreneur Co-Chair, Kalsoom Lakhani, Lewis also shared the following insights that, as career coaches, we can use to further support students and working professionals interested in poverty eradication careers:

Doing vs thinking approaches – Although new solutions can always emerge, we collectively know many ways that work to eradicate poverty. What the field needs is more brains and hands who know how to implement these best practices on a larger scale. Better solutions will come from these future implementations. More doers that know how to implement, measure results, and pivot when needed would be lead to more impact at the bottom of the pyramid than thinkers that seek to understand the complex poverty ecosystem.

‘We vs They’ conversations are a waste of time – Many emerging leaders feel that solutions that have been previously tested and implemented haven’t delivered their promises and therefore are to be ignored. As Edmund Burke put it in the 1700s, “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.” With so much information and social connections available at the fingertips of emerging leaders with access to the internet, emerging leaders need to do their research and learn whether contributing to existing solutions or organizations would be a better investment of their time and money than to launch a new social venture. The iOnPoverty videos, as well as our More Than Money Careers Coaching Modules are designed to help emerging leaders make informed decisions about their next steps as entrepreneurs or employees of social businesses that they can believe in.

Start with what’s around you – Many social innovators, whether entrepreneurs or employees of social businesses, don’t focus on the challenges they face. Instead, they focus on the leverage points they have around them that they can have an impact on. Seeing the results of activating these ‘local’ leverage points help poverty eradication professionals stay motivated and prevent them from burning out. Engaging students and alumni in assessing their local leverage points and engaging in actions that will result in alleviating poverty around them or globally is key to their success. By achieving these early results, emerging leaders will be able to gain the confidence and skills, along with new contacts, that will enable them to amplify their impact over time.

As career coaches, we are dedicated to connecting students and working professionals with information and resources that will enable them to integrate information and best practices to make informed career decisions. Emerging leaders interested in forging a career in poverty eradication have a tough task ahead of them. Fortunately, the iOnPoverty videos make a big difference in providing concrete advice and insights that can make the task of emerging leaders much easier!

Here are a few suggestions for you to use the job (or internship) posting to maximize your chances to convert your application into an interview:

The job posting represents the profile of the ideal candidate the company wants to hire: The hiring manager knows that it is unlikely that s/he will find the ideal candidate. Therefore, your job is to show how close your profile is to that of the perfect candidate described in the job posting.

Don’t let the job description intimidate you: Job seekers are quite often intimidated by job descriptions and don’t apply for jobs they actually are qualified for. As a job seeker, remember that 100% of people who get the job applied for it! Therefore, if your profile meets most of the requirements and some of the preferences listed on the description, apply and let the hiring manager make a decision!

Requirements versus preferences: Hiring managers know that they will not find a candidate with all the requirements and preferences they listed on the description. Based on numerous conversations with recruiting managers, it is not uncommon to hear that the job description changes as they meet with candidates. Therefore, focus on the value you can create by highlighting how much you have in common with the ideal candidate.

Use the job posting as your road map: Your goal is to demonstrate how close your profile is to that of the ideal candidate described in the job description. Use the keywords and skill names used in the job description to tailor your resume and your cover letter.

A computer will first review your application: In the digital age, your application is likely to first be evaluated by a computer program. The computer program will assess if your cover letter and resume match at about 60%-80% of the terms used in the job description. If your resume and cover letter don’t meet the set criterion, your application is likely to be discarded. Therefore, it is important to take the time to send tailored applications for your jobs of interest. This will increase the probability of your application to be taken seriously, and to be reviewed by the hiring manager.

If you are not sure where to find internship and job opportunities that will enable you to blend financial return with social impact and environmental responsibility in the private sector, here are a few to start with:

Net Impact (membership required)

Social Edge

Lifeworth

Justmeans

Businesses for Social Responsibility (BSR) Job Board

Good luck with your job search, and as always, we look forward to reading your questions and your comments!

We all have an Inner Fisherman and an Inner MBA influencing our decisions… How are your inner Fisherman and MBA driving your decisions? Are they avoiding each other? Are they connecting with one another as they dictate how you should spend your time and energy to maximize well-being while meeting your financial obligations?

For many of us, the expectations placed upon us by explicit and implicit messages we receive from parents, and media and society in general heavily skew our perception of what is truly important in life. Of course, and although money doesn’t make people happy, financial security is something everyone aspires to.

But, many times, we fail to address what amassing more and more money really mean to us. For some people amassing money is a way to gain respect and build their reputation as a success story. For other people, money is freedom, something you need so that you can spend more time doing what you want to do. For other people, money is dirty and handling or talking about money should be avoid at all costs (pun intended).

Take a moment to think about what money means to you. Think about becoming aware of the significance of money in your life has maybe driven some of the educational and career choices you have made thus far. Being aware of the significance of money in your life and career can significantly help you define what you can do to move past the simplistic ‘more is better’ attitude about money so often reinforced in the Western World.

Reflecting upon how much money would be ‘Just Enough’ for you can be liberating, and can tremendously help you connect your inner Fisherman and your inner MBA in a way that helps you build your path to meaning and money.
